Lecture Workshop on “Laser Probes: Revealing Cells and Elements” Leaves Participants Enlightened
December 19, 2023
The Department of Physics at Union Christian College, Aluva, hosted a successful one-day workshop on December 19, 2023, focusing on “Laser Probes: Revealing Cells and Elements” at T B Ninan Hall. The event, part of the Scientific Social Responsibility Policy project sanctioned by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, attracted 60 participants, including faculty, research scholars, and students.
The workshop featured two distinguished speakers, Dr. Manu Vaishakh and Dr. Anoop K K. Dr. Vaishakh’s talk, “Techniques in Bioimaging – An Introduction,” highlighted the evolution of optical microscopes for bioimaging applications, covering organs, tissues, cells, and molecules. The engaging session ended with a lively discussion.
After a lunch break, Dr. Anoop K K took the stage with his talk on “Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS): An Emerging Tool for Elemental Analysis.” The session began with an introduction to spectroscopy and laser ablation, delving into the application of highly energetic laser pulses for material characterization. Dr. Anoop also shared insights into LIBS’ role in Chandrayaan-3’s elemental analysis of the lunar surface.
The interactive discussions throughout the day provided participants with deep insights into the use of lasers for bioimaging and elemental analysis, catering to the intellectual curiosity of students, research scholars, and faculty. The workshop served as a testament to Union Christian College’s commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and research in the field of physics.
