Introductory Workshop on Astronomy and Astrophysics
Astronomical Society of Kerala (ASK) in collaboration with IUCAA Centre for Astronomy Research and Development (ICARD),Newmann College, Thodupuzha has organized an Introductory Workshop on Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Dept. of Physics, U C College, Aluva for the benefit of P.G and highly motivated U.G students from various colleges and universities in Kerala, during 29 – 30 August 2019. The objective of the workshop is to foster the interest in Astronomy & Astrophysics among the students in the region and to motivate more students to take up this stream of science and explore the exciting possibilities in this field. The program consists of lectures, sky watch and problem solving sessions. The programme is organised as a tribute to Prof. V. C. Kuriakose sir (Rtd. Head, Dept. of Physics, CUSAT) whose remembrance day is on August 30. Prof. V. C. Kuriakose was the mentor for generations of astronomers from Kerala. He has guided 22 researchers towards their doctoral degree and in his scientific career VCK sir made important contributions to several fields including Gravitation and Cosmology, Astrophysics and Non-linear dynamics. Prof. Kuriakose was active in the dissemination of Astronomy and Astrophysics among the young generation and guided the group at CUSAT which conducted regular sky-watches and classes at schools and colleges at several parts of Kerala. He was very active in the field of research and in the promotion of Astronomy in Kerala till his demise. He formed a group called Astronomical Society of Kerala (ASK) for the promotion of Astronomy in Kerala. Until his last breath, VCK sir, relentlessly worked for the cause of Astronomy education in Universities in our state and in the country. Dept. of Physics, U C College, Aluva, is the alma matter of Prof. V. C. Kuriakose and the place where he started his career. VCK sir’s wife Prof. K. K. Leelamma has also served as a faculty member in the same Department for 32 years.
